Mountain Man Competition Flyer rev1
Hi Troop,
Several scouts and parents have inquired about the shooting camp I put on every summer. I’ve attached the flyer for more information. This is NOT a Boy Scout camp, however, all shooting badges, and usually a couple more are offered. I will be sending this flyer out to the council in a couple weeks. If you’re interested in attending, please email me as soon as possible. I only take 35 boys and/or girls for this camp.

Troop:
It’s that time of year again…time for our:
2ND ANNUAL RECYCLING FUNDRAISER!
Last year we were able to collect $850.00 through the Scout’s fund raising efforts! AND WE DIDN’T HAVE TO SELL A THING! Let’s see if we can top that this year.
This fundraiser (and the garage sale fundraiser) helps the troop offset some of it’s operating expenses, and helps us purchase equipment for the troop. Your efforts help us to keep our registration dues lower than the average annual dues for troops in our district.
If we all pitch in…we can make a difference.
WINNING PATROL GETS AN ALL EXPENSE PAID PIZZA PARTY!
Please review the attached flyer for more details.
Good luck,

We will not be having a troop committee meeting in December.
Greenbar: Meeting changed from December 1st to December 3th.
Because all scouts with appointed and elected positions (Patrol Leaders, scouts with troop positions, scouts with Scoutmaster approved positions) should be attending the TLT training Friday December 3th-December 4th, we will move the Greenbar meeting to this date.

Our Our first food drop off for Scouting for Food will be at the Troop meeting 11/15 . Mr. Backley will be there to pick up any food you’ve collected.
Our Scouting for Food community service is fast
approaching. We are hopeful that every member of every
patrol will participate in this very important community
service. All of the items collected will go to the Santa
Clarita Food Pantry. The Pantry told us recently that they
are very short of food and other nonperishable items, so we
really need to help out.
Here’s the breakdown:
1.Each patrol is expected to contact their local grocery
store and ask for the opportunity to solicit
food/nonperishable items. Plan on 1 day for 4 to 6 hours.
2. Once you have a date booked with the grocery store,
please let me know so I can fill out a tour permit.
3. Scouts should arrive at the store on the selected
date/shift in their full Class A uniforms. We also must have
at least two adults present while they solicit donations.
4. I have attached the handout that should be given to
shoppers as they enter the store. Please print enough flyers
so that you have plenty. 200-300 flyers is a good amount for
a 6 hours shift on a weekend day. That’s about 30 to 50
sheets of paper.
5. Glen Backley has agreed to pick up the collections at
two different troop meetings, and bring the collection to
the food pantry. The dates will be:
November 15th and December 13th.
Our first drop off for the toy drive will be at the Troop meeting 11/15 . Mr. Michels will have a box for you to leave your toys.
See attached flyer
Please note: The Meeting Place for our Committee Meeting has been moved. Starting November 10th will now be meeting at the Southern California Edison building located at
25625 W. Rye Canyon. This is on the corner of Rye Canyon and Avenue Crocker.
Dates and times will remain the same.
Backpackers:
The rained out backpack trip has been rescheduled. Please review the attached flyer and RSVP to Mr. Olson @ gcolson@bigvalley.net if you would like to attend.
Thank you

Here’s a video of our first trip in the new backpacking program. Most of the boys did over 15 miles and two took the extra trip out to Lake 6 and added about 3 more miles for a total of 18 miles (Woohoo Matt and Austin). You can see all the photos here
If you have some pictures you took please let me know so we can add the to the site.
We had a great day and it wasn’t too hot either. The boys even managed to flag down a passing LAPD helicopter which proceeded to fly circles around us while we were on the top of Mt. Hollywood.

Dear Parents & Scouts,
We’re excited to be kicking off our new Hiking and Backpacking program at Troop 583. There are no specific details on trips, locations or dates just yet but we do have some really cool things planned. This program has been designed to be challenging but it will be worth it.
This e-mail is being sent out in advance of any actual outings is to see how much interest there is. Our troop has almost doubled in size and we may have to change some plans depending on how many scouts want to participate.
The goal of this program is to have the Scouts earn their Backpacking Merit Badge and make a three day trip to Mount Whitney next summer. Scouts that participate will probably also earn their hiking merit badge as a result of the required training.
