Our Our first food drop off for Scouting for Food will be at the Troop meeting 11/15 . Mr. Backley will be there to pick up any food you’ve collected.
Our Scouting for Food community service is fast
approaching. We are hopeful that every member of every
patrol will participate in this very important community
service. All of the items collected will go to the Santa
Clarita Food Pantry. The Pantry told us recently that they
are very short of food and other nonperishable items, so we
really need to help out.
Here’s the breakdown:
1.Each patrol is expected to contact their local grocery
store and ask for the opportunity to solicit
food/nonperishable items. Plan on 1 day for 4 to 6 hours.
2. Once you have a date booked with the grocery store,
please let me know so I can fill out a tour permit.
3. Scouts should arrive at the store on the selected
date/shift in their full Class A uniforms. We also must have
at least two adults present while they solicit donations.
4. I have attached the handout that should be given to
shoppers as they enter the store. Please print enough flyers
so that you have plenty. 200-300 flyers is a good amount for
a 6 hours shift on a weekend day. That’s about 30 to 50
sheets of paper.
5. Glen Backley has agreed to pick up the collections at
two different troop meetings, and bring the collection to
the food pantry. The dates will be:
November 15th and December 13th.

North Fork Sespe Creek Creek is in the Los Padres Nat’l Forest. It is a primitive, wooded canyon with chaparral on the adjoining hillsides. The hike will be on the Piedra Blanca Trail; camping at the Piedra Blanca trail camp. The trail crosses the Piedra Blanca or white rocks, a monolithic formation of large, smooth rocks. Rain cancels trip.

Sunday August 8th 2009 – Mount Hollywood Day Hike
We’ll do this hike with backpacks. Pack what you would bring on an overnight trip, be sure to bring your 10 essentials and plenty of water. Don’t worry if you don’t know what to pack, we want to see what you think you’d need. Please pack at least 20 pounds but not more than 25. If you own a backpack please use that, if you don’t own a backpack yet you can use a day pack but please pack it the same way.
This hike is approximately 5 miles round trip, it begins near the carousel in Griffith Park and goes to a lookout near the Hollywood Sign.
This hike is REQUIRED to start this program. We will need to see each scouts ability level and equipment. If you want to earn the merit badges and go on the Mt. Whitney trip you must start with this hike.
September 4-7 2009 – Cottonwood Lakes Backpack
This is a three day 15 mile backpack. The trip starts and ends at 10,000 ft. We’ll drive up Friday night and come back Sunday afternoon. The purpose of this hike is to gain experience backpacking at high altitude. The hike itself will not be overly strenuous but the altitude may cause fatigue.
This hike is required for the Backpacking Merit Badge and the Mt. Whitney trip.
NOTE: Additional details will be sent out prior to each event.
