The Troop 583 Basic Backpacking Awareness indoor training session is designed for both scouts and adults who are interested in participating in the Troop Backpacking Program. The objective of the backpacking committee is to develop back-country competency and proficiency for participating in short and long backpacking treks. The emphasis of this
training is on developing an awareness of backpacking and wilderness skills so that the wilderness travel can be conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

This troop shooting event is only open to Scouts who need the troop firearm safety class.

All scouts interested in participating in the Troop 583 shooting program must first  attend the indoor mandatory safety and training instruction. This training is only offered a couple times each year. If you’re interested in shotgun and/or rifle shooting, it is highly recommended that you attend this training. Scoutswill not  be able to participate in troop shooting events until they have attending this training. Classroom portion of training will be held from .9:00am to 11:OOamin the mess hall. Rifle shoot will be from 11:OOamto 1:30pm on the VT Range.

Troop 583 Archery Bowstring and Arrow Workshop 5-11

I’ve attached to Camporee 2011 information packet to this email for your review. There’s some erroneous information in there that you don’t need to worry about (like the registration instructions), but there’s also a lot of useful information about the scoring process and the events that may help your patrols prepare for the event

Please review the attached backpack flyer. This backpack is considered a “basic” backpack. Fun for new backpackers, and experienced backpackers too.

New Scouts and/or those scouts who have not gone through the troop indoor backpack training:

We will be holding the annual “mandatory” troop backpacking training class in April, before this backpack. A flyer will go out shortly, but just so you can put it on your calendars, it will be April 15th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm.
If you would like to participate in backpacks, now, or possibly in the future, please plan on attending this class.

Strategy Camp Flyer 2011

Several scouts and parents have inquired about the shooting camp I put on every summer. I’ve attached the flyer for more information. This is NOT a Boy Scout camp, however, all shooting badges, and usually a couple more are offered. I will be sending this flyer out to the council in a couple weeks. If you’re interested in attending, please email me as soon as possible. I only take 35 boys and/or girls for this camp.

2ND ANNUAL RECYCLING FUNDRAISER!

Last year we were able to collect $850.00 through the Scout’s fund raising efforts! AND WE DIDN’T HAVE TO SELL A THING! Let’s see if we can top that this year.

This fundraiser (and the garage sale fundraiser) helps the troop offset some of it’s operating expenses, and helps us purchase equipment for the troop. Your efforts help us to keep our registration dues lower than the average annual dues for troops in our district.

If we all pitch in…we can make a difference.

Big Bear Ski Trip Information 3-11

Our Scouting for Food community service is fast
approaching. We are hopeful that every member of every
patrol will participate in this very important community
service. All of the items collected will go to the Santa
Clarita Food Pantry. The Pantry told us recently that they
are very short of food and other nonperishable items, so we
really need to help out.

Here’s the breakdown:

1.Each patrol is expected to contact their local grocery
store and ask for the opportunity to solicit
food/nonperishable items. Plan on 1 day for 4 to 6 hours.

2. Once you have a date booked with the grocery store,
please let me know so I can fill out a tour permit.

3. Scouts should arrive at the store on the selected
date/shift in their full Class A uniforms. We also must have
at least two adults present while they solicit donations.

4. I have attached the handout that should be given to
shoppers as they enter the store. Please print enough flyers
so that you have plenty. 200-300 flyers is a good amount for
a 6 hours shift on a weekend day. That’s about 30 to 50
sheets of paper.

5. Glen Backley has agreed to pick up the collections at
two different troop meetings, and bring the collection to
the food pantry. The dates will be:

November 15th and December 13th.

HELP!

WE NEED A NEW TROOP TRAILER

Let’s face it…

Our old, pitiful, small, run down troop trailer is unsafe, and just plain embarrassing to pull around town.

It’s time to replace it with a bigger, better, and more attractive trailer!

With a troop our size, a trailer is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.

In order to accomplish this task, we’ll need the whole troop to pitch in and help.

Together, we can do it…and you don’t have to sell a thing!

Our first trailer fundraising drive will be:

AN ALUMINUM CAN AND PLASTIC BOTTLE RECYCLING DRIVE

Here’s how it works:

The drive will begin on February 1^st and end on April 5^th.

We challenge each patrol to save as many soda cans and plastic drink bottles

(please, no other recyclables) as they possibly can.

Patrols will bring their recyclables to the April 5^th troop meeting where they will be weighed.

The total weight will be divided by the number of Scouts in the patrol to determine the average weight per Scout.

The patrol with the most weight per Scout WINS…

An all expense paid ICE CREAM PARTY at their next patrol meeting!

So, don’t delay…recycle for the troop today!

Remember to ask your family, friends, and neighbors to help out. Make a flyer asking them to save their cans and bottles. Try setting up weekly pickups to collect their recyclables too! If we all pitch in, we can do this. We CAN have a new trailer by the time we go to camp this summer!
